SUAlert & OPT-IN

Instructions for Signing-Up and Updating your SU Alert Account

SU Alert is Stevenson鈥檚 campus emergency text and email messaging system. SU Alert is an opt-in system, so you must sign up to receive emergency alert texts and/or email messages to your preferred email address.

All Stevenson faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to sign up for SU Alert. In the event of a campus emergency, major weather-related campus closing and delays, and other campus emergency situations, SU Alert texts and emails will be the first way we will communicate information to our campus community.

We encourage everyone to sign up for both the text and email alert options in SU Alert, because email can be helpful in the delivery of these important messages when you are traveling in areas of weaker cell coverage.

In addition, faculty, staff, and students can sign up for optional SU News messages to receive texts/emails about campus news and events such as social and cultural events and activities, Arts Alive! events, and other campus activities of in interest to students, faculty, and staff.

Resident students are encouraged to sign up for SU Resident News to receive important news, updates, and information specifically for SU students living in campus housing.

Please use the tabs below to sign-up if you a new SU Alert subscriber or access your account if you are a current SU Alert subscriber.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can get SU Alerts?
The SU Alert service is designed for student, faculty, and staff who will be affected directly by an emergency on the University鈥檚 campuses as well as for weather-related closings or delays, utility outages, and other events that can affect the opening of the campus for normal daily operations.

Why should I get SU Alerts?

  • Text messaging is more reliable in emergency situations when communication systems reach high capacity. Text messages will get through when phone calls will not.
  • You will receive alerts anywhere, even when you do not have access to a computer.
  • SU Alert also allows you to enter your preferred email address.

Will my cell phone number be kept confidential?
Yes. Cell phone numbers used in conjunction with the SU Alert system are not shared or sold to any other systems or services.

How many SU Alert text messages will I receive?
SU Alert text messages will be sent only to alert you to emergency situations in which there is an imminent threat to public safety, building evacuation, or campus closure or delayed opening. The exact number is difficult to predict, but there should be very few. You will receive messages within seconds of their transmission. If your cell phone is turned off when a text message is sent, you will receive it after you turn your cell phone on, but only if you do so within seven days from the original transmission.

What do I need to get SU Alerts and how much does it cost?
All you need is a cell phone with text messaging capabilities. There is no charge to users for signing up. Individual cell phone plans will apply normal charges for the text message.

What if I change my cell phone provider?
When you change cell/mobile phone providers but keep your existing mobile number it is considered 鈥減orted.鈥 Depending on the mobile phone provider, it may take up to 30 days for the SU Alert system to be updated. During the 鈥減orted鈥 time period, you may not receive alerts because the alerts are sent to the old mobile provider, which may not forward them. You can, however, log in to your account, click 鈥淪ervices鈥 in the top menu, and change your provider manually to correct this.

How do I sign up for SU Alert?
To register, you do need to have your cell phone handy. Click the link under the tab for 鈥淣ew User Signup.鈥 You will be asked to create your own username and password. (Note: this username and password has no relationship to your SU network, webmail, or WebXpress username and password). You will receive a text message that will include a 4-digit validation code. You must enter the validation code on the confirmation webpage and hit the 鈥淰alidate鈥 button.

What if I do not receive/enter the 4-digit validation code?
If you do not enter the four-digit validation code, you will not receive alerts. To receive alerts, you must login and revalidate your phone. If you do not receive the code, you can log into your account, visit the 鈥淪ervices鈥 page, and resend the code.

How can I opt-out of or discontinue receiving SU Alerts?
You can opt-out (discontinue) at any time. Login to your SU Alert account to remove your phone number and/or email address under 鈥淪ervices.鈥 You can also terminate your account permanently under 鈥淎ccount.鈥

How do I know I am receiving an SU Alert message?
All SU Alert messages will be from 鈥淪U Alert鈥.

What will the SU Alert tell me?
A short text message will state the type of emergency and indicate suggested action. For instance, for the presence of a gunman on campus grounds: 鈥淎CTIVE SHOOTER NEAR (LOCATION). LOCKDOWN AND SHELTER IN PLACE.鈥 Because the messages must be brief, you will always be directed to go to the University鈥檚 website homepage at www.stevenson.edu where further details and updates will be available.

An important reminder: The SU Alert text messaging service is just one of the methods the University will use to communicate emergency information. If appropriate, Stevenson campus emails, SU website, SU Portal, the SU emergency phone line (410-486-7669), the telephone switchboard, local media, and other communication tools will also be used.

How do I subscribe or unsubscribe from the SU News or SU Resident News OPT-IN text messages?
To add or remove yourself from an optional group, log in to your SU Alert account, click 鈥淕roups鈥 at the top and click 鈥淪ubscribe鈥 or 鈥淯nsubscribe鈥 below the appropriate group. Texts from these text accounts will be tagged 鈥淪U News鈥 or 鈥淪U Resident News鈥 to distinguish them from SU Alert emergency messages.

What if I am experiencing problems subscribing to or accessing my SU Alert account to unsubscribe or change my carrier, cell number, or other preferences?

For assistance, please contact the Stevenson help Desk at campus ext. 3000, via email at helpdesk@stevenson.edu, or via the Help Desk ticket system .
